Empowered Journeys: Stories of Resilience, Financial Independence, and Community Impact
Meet Jahnavi Birdika, a financial inclusion advocate and an inspiration to us all. Jahnavi interviewed members in her community which led to beautifully crafted stories of individuals who overcame financial adversity and achieved stability.
Let’s dive into the stories she uncovered.
Asha and the accidental bakery business
Asha Singh’s journey to resilience and self determination is nothing short of inspiring. As a divorced single mother to a teenage daughter Aisha – living in Kolkata, Asha found it difficult to make ends meet. From education costs to increasing expenses and dwindling savings, Asha’s anxieties grew, but they faced each day with a resilient smile.
When suddenly, while baking her daughter’s birthday cake, she had an epiphany, she wanted to start her own bakery!
With initial investment from her remaining savings, she initiated this journey in 2020, making cakes, pastries, and cookies. Word spread, and orders came trickling in. Her business further augmented due to Covid-19. The first 20 orders were a mix of supportive family, friends, and neighbours, but soon enough, strangers started knocking on her doors. Asha’s home bakery gained popularity, and her phone rang nonstop. Orders starting pouring in from – birthdays, weddings, and corporate events! Her unique flavors and designs captivated the community. Monthly sales soared, and savings began to rebuild. However, the picture wasn’t always rosy, her sales weren’t always upward sloping, she faced periods of slow income. But she leveraged those times and took bakery lessons to further polish her skills.
By 2022, Asha’s life had transformed. She had enough savings to fully fund Aisha’s college tuition. She was known as the go-to baker, with 65 average monthly orders. People raved about her creations. Asha beamed with pride, knowing she had now overcome adversity. From a struggling single mother to a successful entrepreneur, her journey inspired Jahanvi.
As Asha piped icing onto a cake, she smiled, grateful for the twist of fate that led her to this sweet success. “Life may knock you down,” she said to Aisha, “but with determination and hard work, you can rise, stronger and sweeter than ever.”
Sima’s newfound love for sewing
Jahnavi was also inspired by Sima, who worked with her family as a househelp for more than two decades. However, to Jahnavi she was more than that, she was also a constant presence in Jahnavi’s life as a confidant and guardian. Fondly referred as Sima Masi, Jahnavi was filled with warmth and admiration for her when she penned down her story.
Jahnavi was only five years old when Sima joined her family, driven by the desire to earn a living and support her loved ones. Sima’s tireless work ethic and dedication were inspiring, but little did they know that Sima harbored a secret talent.
Jahnavi wrote “In her spare moments, Sima Masi would stitch exquisite clothes and designs, revealing a creative soul. Years passed before we discovered her hidden gift, but once we did, we encouraged her to nurture it. Her passion for stitching grew, and soon she shared her dream of opening her own shop.”
Soon enough, Sima found a rental place in her locality and decided to take the leap, Jahnavi and her family were overjoyed! Although this meant, Sima would leave their house, a bittersweet feeling. But, her determination to build a better life for herself and her family was unwavering. Sima’s son and sister were her biggest motivators, and she vowed to provide them with a brighter future.
On visiting Sima’s shop after a year and a half, the transformation was astonishing. Her shop was bustling with customers and Sima was radiant with happiness. Her eyes sparkled with contentment, a far cry from the struggles she once faced.
Elated and inspired about how the women in her community were facing financial challenges head on, Jahnavi also highlighted the importance of financial education, emergency savings, and diversified income streams through her research.
Did you know? Underprivileged communities remain largely unaware of mobile banking’s features, with less than 25% familiar with its services.
This highlights the urgent need for more inclusive financial education and services to ensure equitable access and opportunities, promoting economic growth and stability throughout the country and Jahnavi is taking all the right steps towards that.
Jahnavi’s passion has always been to empower individuals to take control of their financial future and build a more secure life.
She even conducted virtual workshops with Kshamata NGO on critical financial topics like mobile banking, the importance of digital wages and how to navigate apps in a secure manner.
