Exploring Solutions: Srehari’s Insightful Interview on Combating Drug Abuse
Embarking on a journey to combat drug abuse, Srehari had the incredible opportunity to meet a renowned and respected drug expert, Dr A. Vengadesh Babu, Indian Revenue Service Officer. This meeting, which took place prior to June 26th, was marked by a warm and impressive welcome. Their shared passion for tackling the issue of drug abuse ignited a conversation that led to a remarkable interview. In this article, Srehari dives into this insightful conversation, delving into thought-provoking questions and exploring collaborative solutions for addressing the pressing issue of drug abuse.
World communities involved in drug abuse campaigns today urge the youth campaigners to capitalise on the opportunity to learn about evidence-based drug use prevention and connect and share ideas with each other, and be empowered to become active in their schools, communities and youth groups for substance use prevention and health promotion.
The issue of substance abuse among students is a growing concern that requires a thorough examination to develop effective intervention strategies.
This research article presents findings from a comprehensive survey conducted in the year 2021 across three districts (Chennai, Ooty and Tiruvannamalai) in Tamil Nadu by a non-governmental organisation. The survey aimed to assess the prevalence of drug addiction among students and to identify potential correlations between age and drug use. A total of 3021 students from 168 schools participated in the survey. The results highlight a significant association between higher grade levels and drug addiction, with older students being more prone to substance abuse. Among the 256 students who admitted to drug usage, 145 were from classes XI and XII, 90 from classes IX and X, and 26 from classes VII and VIII. These findings shed light on the need for targeted interventions and preventive measures within educational institutions to address this alarming trend.
Methodology
This research article presents the results of a survey conducted across three districts in Tamil Nadu by a non-governmental organisation. The study focuses on the relationship between age and drug addiction among students.
The survey employed a cross-sectional design and targeted a diverse group of students across various grade levels. A total of 3021 students from 168 schools in the selected districts participated voluntarily in the survey. The survey tool consisted of structured questions aimed at gathering information about drug usage patterns, grade levels, and demographics.
Results
The survey revealed a concerning prevalence of drug addiction among the surveyed students. Out of the total respondents, 256 students admitted to using drugs. The distribution of drug users across different grade levels was as follows:
- Class XI and XII: 145 students
- Class IX and X: 90 students
- Class VII and VIII: 26 students
The data clearly indicates a higher prevalence of drug addiction among older students in higher grade levels. This trend highlights the need for targeted interventions, particularly for students in classes XI and XII.
Perspective Study
- Out of the total students surveyed, Alcohol, Cool lip capsules & Tobacco occupies major I.e. around 75% of the abused substances. Cannabis, whitener and rubber solutions together contributes to the balance quantum leaving only a marginal 6% to other intoxicants.
- For any act good or bad, study on strength of trigger can provide good insight into the problems and necessary solutions. Based on the above, the extent of trigger, acquaintance/availability of the substances were studied which yielded the below pattern:
- The above study shows that Peer pressure has triggered half of the student population and the contribution of easy access and availability taking the next big chunk of reasons for substance abuse.
- The state of Mind of an individual for choosing the path of drug is studied as below: This provides insight into the psychological status of students which they feel as a correct state of mind to get into the act of substance abuse.
- Happiness and sadness, the two extreme diametrically opposite emotions of an individual human, have more than 80% contribution to the state of mind of students.

Key Findings
The findings of this survey echo previous research that suggests a positive correlation between age and drug addiction among adolescents. As students’ progress through their educational journey, they may encounter increased stressors, peer pressures, and academic demands, which could contribute to the higher prevalence of drug usage among older students. Moreover, students in higher grade levels might have easier access to drugs and a greater sense of autonomy, further facilitating experimentation and usage.
Student’s seeking emotional support, individuals’ exposure, the group of people they are compelled to move with, availability of free unstructured time is time and again proving to be the factors contributing for students to move towards substance abuse.
Implications
The outcomes of this survey emphasise the necessity of implementing preventive measures and educational programs that address substance abuse among students, particularly focusing on older age groups. Schools should consider integrating drug education into their curricula, offering counselling services, and fostering a supportive environment that encourages open discussions about the risks of substance abuse.
The findings of this survey underscore the urgent need for preventive measures and intervention strategies to address the growing issue of drug addiction among students in Tamil Nadu. By focusing on older age groups, particularly students in classes XI and XII, educational institutions and policymakers can work collaboratively to create a safer and healthier environment for students to thrive academically and emotionally. Educate the students to trust their “ability to take decision”, ability to express their feelings” “ability to assert themselves”, “ability to solve problems” are the urgent needs of the day.
