How can SEL programs contribute to the prevention and management of mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, and stress, among children and adolescents? Fostering Adolescent Well-Being: Unlocking the power of Social and Emotional learning
Mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, and stress, have become increasingly prevalent among children and adolescents. These challenges can have long-lasting impacts on their overall well being, academic performance, and social development. Social – emotional learning or also known as SEL has shown effective solutions and ways to develop skills of self awareness and self regulation for children in their growing age. By teaching children and adolescents to identify and understand their emotions, SEL programs empower them to better navigate stressors, anxiety, and depressive thoughts. By learning to recognise their emotions, individuals are more likely to seek help and engage in healthy coping mechanisms, thus mitigating the severity of mental health issues. SEL has been raised to be a successful field for emotional support for children. This field has been added to courses and timetables of students in schools to make students strong and get them a safe room to express their inner thoughts and feelings.
SEL programs focus on building resilience by teaching children and adolescents important skills such as problem-solving, decision-making, and goal-setting. Resilience enables individuals to adapt to adversity, bounce back from setbacks, and cope with stress more effectively. By developing resilience, young people are better equipped to handle challenges that may contribute to mental health issues. They develop a sense of self-efficacy and optimism, which can protect against the development of anxiety and depression.
Children and adolescents often face social challenges, such as peer pressure, bullying, or feelings of isolation, which can impact their mental well-being. SEL programs emphasise the development of social skills and empathy, promoting positive relationships and a sense of belonging. By creating a supportive and inclusive environment, these programs help mitigate the negative impact of social challenges and reduce the risk of anxiety, depression, and stress.One concrete example of SEL support is the implementation of SEL classes in my school, which aimed to strengthen students at a younger age. These classes were integrated into the curriculum, occurring on a weekly or monthly basis. As a student attending these classes, I had the opportunity to reflect on myself and develop important social-emotional skills. During these classes, we engaged in various activities and discussions that encouraged self-reflection. We learned about emotions, empathy, communication, and problem-solving techniques. Through interactive exercises, we were able to identify and understand our own emotions, as well as recognise and empathise with the feelings of others.
These activities helped us develop a sense of self-awareness and fostered a positive classroom environment. Additionally, my school recognised the importance of physical well-being in promoting mental health. As part of our SEL support, our teacher organised physical education classes where we had the opportunity to engage in our favourite sports and physical activities. These sessions allowed us to release stress and tension, and it contributed to a positive and uplifting atmosphere within the school.
By combining SEL classes with physical education, my school provided a holistic approach to promoting mental health and well-being. The SEL classes equipped us with the necessary skills to navigate our emotions, communicate effectively, and solve problems in a constructive manner. The physical education classes not only promoted physical fitness but also served as a means to relieve stress and enhance our overall mood.
To bring out the emotions of the children and show NGO’s what SEL is I collected my knowledge together to do sessions with children by helping them express. I made children in an NGO to colour day to day emojis used in different colours they felt to support the expression. For example the smiling emoji was coloured in yellow that shows sunshine and happiness or one of their favourite colours such being blue. This lets the child express himself or herself. As observed this made them calmer and happier. Even positive social connections are integral to mental well-being. SEL programs emphasise the development of interpersonal skills, empathy, and responsible decision-making. By fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, these programs encourage healthy relationships and communication among children and adolescents.
Strong social connections act as a protective factor against mental health issues by providing emotional support and reducing feelings of isolation. Additionally, SEL programs promote empathy, reducing the stigma surrounding mental health and facilitating understanding and acceptance among peers. Slam out Loud, an organisation is another example that portrays the impact of social- emotional learning through their website. This organisation is a non-profit community that helps children to express themselves through art. A 15 year old boy, Suraj quoted ‘It’s not necessary for me to tell you what I or dislike but it upsets me when someone’s voice is suppressed.’ This quote put on the website really strikes the audience to rethink about SEL helping adolescent children. Suraj’s quote captures the essence of empathy, understanding, and the significance of promoting a nurturing environment for young individuals. It reflects his awareness of the value of every person’s voice and the negative impact of silencing others. This quote resonates with the core principles of SEL, which aim to foster social- emotional skills, including empathy, communication, and responsible decision-making.
