TribesforGOOD at the 14th Sankalp Global Summit
“Collaboration allows us to know more than we are capable of knowing ourselves” – Paul Solarz
TribesforGOOD had the valuable opportunity to collaborate and conduct a session at the 14th Sankalp Global Summit, 2022 on 27th September, 2022.
Sankalp creates thriving ecosystems for impact-led businesses in their mission to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, and this year, their mission was to bring together global and regional collaborators who will transform impact to help achieve the SDGs.
Our young ChangeWarriors who have created impact by working on cutting-edge themes like Financial Literacy, STEM and Digital Education, etc. joined the session to speak on the topic “Social Impact via Gen-Z and Woke Culture”.
One of the fundamental shifts in thinking encouraged by Sankalp is making the change happen, instead of waiting for the change. This resonates deeply with the work our ChangeWarriors do – instead of waiting around for ‘adults’ to find solutions to world problems, they have recognized the effect it would have on their own generation and harnessed ideas to solve it themselves. GenZ believes in advocacy, collaboration, and action to navigate the changing world dynamic.
Social Impact via Gen-Z & Woke Culture
While Millennials and Gen Z agree that we need to rebuild our world to make it liveable and likeable for all, the latter seems keener on the doing. They are hyper-aware of the happenings around us and are more open to actions that promote equal opportunities, dignity of life, and communityhood. ‘Wokeness’ or the awareness of social injustices and the questioning of the dominant paradigm, which is an inevitable characteristic of Gen Z,has greatly influenced the perception and execution of social impact in today’s world. Today’s youth care deeply about topics such as gender, sexuality, mental health, equality and rights, and climate change. They feel a need to bring change, and this sets them apart from their older counterparts.
Our ChangeWarriors shared what ‘woke’ meant to them, and it ranged from making politically informed decisions, to being aware of the issues in the world around them.
Channelling Change – the work of our ChangeWarriors
TFG ChangeWarriors Amanya Sahney, Somin Narain, Tanvi Agarwal, Ritvi Agarwal, and facilitator Ajay Gokul joined in for the session, which was hosted by Mandeep Kaur, founder and Program Director, TribesforGOOD.
While Amanya talked on the impact of awareness of digital money transactions has on working women from low-income families, Somin Narain spoke on the importance of promoting STEM education among high school students. Somin taught science and Mathematics for high school students as a peer mentor, and piqued their interest by making it easier for them. Ritvi worked with 8th and 9th grade students,to help them catch up on studies during the pandemic. Our facilitator Ajay also shared his experience working on the education of students from our partner NGOs.
The session helped them interact with development sector experts from around the world, like Mr. Davis Achiki, from Kenya, working on a model of community building by encouraging young commercial farmers.
The advice our ChangeWarriors had to give was to ‘just start’, even if you have many doubts, or a lot of activities on your plate.
